How it's built.
The goo was the hard part, and the first version got it wrong twice. The toasts merged and parted so quickly that the filter never had time to draw anything between them, so I tried drawing the necks myself, and that looked like bars with softened corners, not liquid. What fixed it was slowing the toasts down only at the exact moment their edges part, and letting the blur do the rest on its own. The goo also has to belong to the move, never to the rest state, so it dissolves while the toasts are still travelling and nothing is left once they settle. If it lingers for even a moment after they stop, the whole thing reads as a glitch.
The close went through three versions too. Shrinking to nothing felt like a different animation from everything else, so a closed toast now leaves the way it came in, front one first, and the ones behind only move once it has gone. Past that it is yours: pick the corner, how many show at once, how long they stay, how thick the goo is, and whether a close slides out or shrinks into the stack.
