How it's built.
The switch is one move, not four. Every card sends its old photo off while the new one slides in behind it, and the old one grows a touch and goes soft on the way out, so it reads as the photo being replaced instead of cut. The photos travel the way you moved through the list: pick a word further down and they slide up, pick one above and they slide down.
Click again halfway through and nothing snaps. Every photo still on screen leaves from wherever it is at that moment, so you can run down the list as fast as you like. The photos for a word start loading when you hover it, so the click lands on pictures that are already there.
Change the words and the photos in one hidden list at the top of the section, without touching the cards, and set how long a switch takes. The list works with the arrow keys, and reduced motion turns the move into a short crossfade.
